LABYRINTH

Version: VHS and 20th Anniversary DVD (all releases are the same)

Ah man, this is my favorite movie. Chances are you have seen at least some aspect of it, be it the Fireys or the pants. It's probably the pants. Everybody seems to know about that, even people who never saw the movie.

Why do I like this movie so much? I really don't know. It's always been part of my collection, ever since someone in my house forgot to take the rental back. It's a musical, and it has Muppets. I LOVED Muppets. Muppet Babies was my favorite kids show.

Let's talk about the story. A girl has to venture into a giant maze in order to save her half brother before thirteen hours expire. Along the way, she has to get help from the locals. And there's a hot Goblin King thrown in there, too. ^^; Well, he thinks he's hot. Read the manga. I like how she is acting out her play but forgetting it until near the end. I guess it's supposed to be a coming of age story. Teh interwebz seem to be full of the "sexual desire" route. Oh well.

Characters. I never liked the name Sarah, so I tend to dislike characters with that name. This Sarah is okay, but after I saw Requiem for a Dream I never think of Jennifer Connelly the same way I did before. She's the story, so you can't really block her out. Some of her quips get annoying after a while, but it's better than some movies I've seen.

We have to talk about the Bowie. Good man for the job, considering Henson had Michael Jackson as one of the candidates. YUCK! Bowie is perfect as the smexy Jareth. His heterochromia (two different eye colors) seems like part of the character, and he's got a great voice. His hair is now present in 99% of anime series, and the sarcasm is golden. His outfits are...unique. Look up this movie on TV tropes if you really need to know more about the pants. I guess I'm used to them, so I don't dote on the issue.

Hoggle, the main Muppet character, is a worm. You first see him pissing into a pond and killing faeries. He'll get better over the course of the film, even to the point where he attacks a giant mech. The rest of the characters aren't that important. There is a supporting cast, but nothing major happens because of them.

You really should at least rent this one.
